[M42] Helios 44-2 58mm F2 Review – swirly bokeh lens popular on Instagram

Hiron
Hello, my name is hiron. I am a vintage lens addict. (Twitter / Youtube)

This time I will review Helios 44-2 58mm F2.

The vintage lens I purchased so far was the PENTAX K mount, but the Helios 44-2 58mm F2 is an M42 screw mount lens.

If you shoot with this lens, you can shoot a swirly Bokeh. Because this lens has such a strange effect, it is also popular on Instagram.

I purchased Helios 44-2 58mm F2 on ebay.

I purchased Helios 44-2 58mm F2 on ebay.

Vintage lenses are popular with some young people in Japan. So I looked at the Instagram to find out which vintage lenses are popular.

Then Helios 44-2 58mm F2 and Super-Takumar 55mm F1.8 were popular.

First I decided to buy Helios 44-2 58mm F2.

Helios 44-2 58mm F2 is a Russian vintage lens. You can buy this lens in Japan, but it is a little expensive.

That’s why I used ebay for the first time to buy Helios 44-2 58mm F2.

This is the first time I have purchased anything directly from abroad. It was surprisingly easy to purchase. Helios 44-2 58mm F2 arrived in Japan from Ukrainian exhibitors.

I recommend Helios 44-2 or Helios 44M

If you want to buy a Helios44 series lens, I recommend Helios 44-2 or Helios 44M.

The reason is that these two lenses have a switch to switch the aperture to AUTO / MAN. With this switch, you can move the aperture regardless of which mount adapter you purchase.

I don’t think there is a difference between how these two lenses take pictures.

Select a mount adapter (to use Helios 44-2 58mm F2 with a digital camera)

Helios 44-2 58mm F2 is M42 mount lens. A mount adapter is required to use the vintage lens with current digital cameras.

If you want to use Helios 44-2 58mm F2 with PENTAX digital SLR, you need a mount adapter called M42-PK. It is a thin adapter.

If you use this lens with a SONY mirrorless camera, you will need a mount adapter called M42-NEX.

I’m introducing the mount adapter installation procedure on YouTube video, so please refer to it.

Use a mount adapter suitable for your digital camera.

Photo sample by Helios 44-2 58mm F2

Here are some sample photos taken with the Helios 44-2 58mm F2.

The first is a photo sample of my Helios 44-2 58mm F2 with a PENTAX K-7.

The camera body originally used the PENTAX K-7, but later purchased the Sony Alpha7II. Each photo sample is introduced.

In June 2017, I took a picture at Tokyo Keiba-jo (Tokyo Racecourse) in Fuchu, Tokyo.

This is a photo of the audience watching the paddock seriously. The bokeh in the photo is swirly.

In May 2019 I purchased SONY Alpha7II.

This mirrorless camera has a full-size sensor. Therefore, you can take a wider range of photos with swirly Bokeh by Helios 44-2 58mm F2.

The photo was taken when I attended a portrait workshop.

The photo by Helios 44-2 58mm F2 was not only Swirly Bokeh but also flare.

Helios 44-2 58mm F2 Review Summary

This time, I reviewed Helios 44-2 58mm F2.

I found out why this lens is so popular on Instagram. Images with swirly bokeh cannot be taken with the new lens. This was a very attractive lens.

Thank you for reading to the end.
