[M42] Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 (Meyer Orestegon) Review – I bought for travel.

Hiron
Hello, my name is hiron. I am a vintage lens addict. (Twitter / Youtube)

This time I review Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8.

When I was looking for the perfect all-purpose lens to take on a trip, I thought that Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm F2.4 might be the best.

However, I gave up buying it because the lens was expensive.

I expected the Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 to be an alternative. The photo with this lens was also interesting for bokeh.

Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 (Meyer Optik Orestegon)

I knew the existence of Trioplan that could take “Soap Bubble Bokeh” photos, and I also knew a lens manufacturer called Meyer Optik.

Looking for a lens manufactured by Meyer Optik, I found that Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 is one of them.

Before that, this lens was named “Orestegon“.

This lens can shoot up to 25cm. This lens can be used with A / M switching to change the aperture between auto and manual.

Select a mount adapter (to use Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 with a digital camera)

A mount adapter is required to use the vintage lens with current digital cameras. Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 is M42 mount lens.

If you want to use Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 with PENTAX digital SLR, you need a mount adapter called M42-PK. It is a thin adapter.

If you use this lens with a SONY mirrorless camera, you will need a mount adapter called M42-NEX.

I’m introducing the mount adapter installation procedure on YouTube video, so please refer to it.

Use a mount adapter suitable for your digital camera.

Photo sample by Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8

Here are some sample photos taken with the Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8.

I took this Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 when I traveled to Taiwan in February 2018. SLR PENTAX K-7 was used as the camera body.

Here are some sample photos taken in Taipei.

This is a plastic coin. Use this to board the MRT.

Bokeh in the background of the photo taken with Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 is a little swirled.

This is Shilin Night Market.

If you shoot with Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8, you can take a macro shot like the picture above.

Taipei Station Location

It is around Taipei Station. Taiwan seems to be a country where it is easy to rain.。

Pictures taken with this lens blur the outside of the picture, making it swirl.

Dongmen Station location

It is a popular tourist area in Taipei called Kang Seonglong near Dongmen Station.

An old traditional building has been renovated and is now used as a shop.

Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8 Review Summary

This time, I reviewed Pentacon auto 29mm F2.8.

I took this lens because I thought it was suitable for travel. As a matter of fact, this lens is an easy-to-use wide-angle lens, and the image was undisputed. This lens can also be used for macro photography.

If you expect the strangeness of a vintage lens for this lens, it may be a little disappointing. “Swirly bokeh” Helios 44-2 or “Soap Bubble Bokeh” Domiplan is more interesting.

Thank you for reading to the end.
